ABUJA- IMMEDIATE past Commissioner of Police of the Federal Capital Territory and now the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police in charge of Zone 7, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu yesterday introduced his successor, Police Commissioner Wilson Inalegwu to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Senator Bala Mohammed.
The new FCT Police Commissioner Inalegwu who then attended the FCTA Executive Committee meeting held at the Minister’s residence, Gwarinpa, Abuja said he was happy to be redeployed to the FCT Command and has been part of FCT for several years, just as he pledged to cooperate with the FCT Minister and the Administration towards making the

Territory safe and secured.
Senator Bala Mohammed who hailed Mbu at the meeting, described him as a strict and outstanding officer who combines the qualities that could see him rise to the pinnacle of his profession in future through the will of God.
The Minister described Mbu as a very modest and frank officer and as a fine officer particularly as a former Head of the Police Mobile Unit.
He commended him for his efforts in rehabilitating virtually all broken down vehicles at the FCT Police Command thereby saving the government millions of naira and enhancing the operational efficiency of the Police.
Also speaking, the Minister of State, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide described Mbu as an exceptional police officer. She recalled an instance when Mbu insisted on quality by rejecting old used vehicles (tokunbo) donated to the FCT Command by the Area Council insisting that the Police would only accept donation of roadworthy new vehicles and not scraps for their operation.
Olajumoke said she first noticed Mbu as a thoroughbred officer during his tenure as the Commissioner of Police in charge of Oyo State prior to his posting to Rivers State and FCT.
The new AIG had earlier thanked the Minister and the entire FCT Administration for their contributions towards making his tenure as FCT Commissioner of Police a successful one. In an emotion-ladden valedictory address, Mbu said it was the constant support of the minister that made it possible for him to succeed in the nation’s capital.
According to him, the regular financial support to the Police Command by the FCT Administration was the secret behind the success of the Command during his tenure. He listed some of the things done with the financial support to the Police from the FCTA to include purchase of two mega buses for the welfare of officers and men, rehabilitation of four ambulances and other vehicles for official use.
He said that it was the statutory duty of the Police to lead the way in combating city nuisances such as hawking, destitution and other menaces.
When I was in Port Harcourt, the leopard there I tamed – Mbu
AIG Joseph Mbu also replied Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state who at the weekend accused him of being a politician in Police uniform and stooge of the Presidency, saying that Governor Amaechi wanted someone he can order around as if the person was an errand boy but I (Mbu) tamed him while I was Commissioner of Police in the state.
Disclosing that his loyalty is to the Inspector General of Police, the Commander in chief and the Nation, AIG Mbu said, “It is a well known fact that in the jungle, only a lion who can tame a leopard.
When I was in Port Harcourt, the leopard there, I tamed. Each time the leopard remembers my face he makes noise. But if he knows I am around, he cannot make noise. A lion is always a lion”.
AIG Mbu Joseph who spoke at the handing and taking over ceremony between him and new FCT Police Commissioner, CP Wilson Inalegwu, advised the new CP against putting sentiments in the administration of the command noting, “If you bring sentiment into the performance of Police work, you are going to fail”
“”I have been here as CP FCT for six months now, no single petition was written against me; no single petition was written against my Command. When I assumed office, I made it clear that even if you are mother, sister or brother, no matter who you are, if anybody crosses my path and stops me performing my job, I will crush him”.
“Sending your wife to my house to meet with my wife has nothing to do with my job because my wife is not part of my administration. She has no business with it. What the Police need is leadership by example. The moment you start asking your subordinates, bring me cows, bring me cement to do this or that, you have sold your prestige”.
Continuing he said, “Watch your officers who intimidate female colleague because they want cheap article or reap where they did not sow. The welfare of your men should be paramount. We recently bought 5, 000 raincoats for our men, we ordered jackets “
To the officers and men, he said “I apologise to any one of you if I fought you because of money or property or woman. Whatever I may have done to you be it issuing query, vituperations, it was to make for a better policing we fought crime to standstill. I always let you know that Nigeria and the general public is greater than one person and so the public needed more protection”.
“I know some of you are very bad but you need to change. That is why I keep saying that it is the legacy you leave that matters. If tomorrow for instance, they say all AIG’s and above should be retired so that others can grow, I am ready to drop my uniform and go but who are we handing over to? Are handing over to chickens?
“You must build confidence under the authority of the IGP, authority of the President of the country. Let the glory of the police return. Go to Port Harcourt, Go to Oyo state and see how we made policing respectable”, Mbu added.
