Jonathan has no interest in NYCN leadership, says Minister

Abuja - The Supervising Minister of Youths Development, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Thursday said that President Goodluck Jonathan had no interest in the leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN).

Abdullahi told newsmen during a `family meeting’ with key NYCN stakeholders at the National stadium in Abuja.

He said it was unfair for anyone to drag the name of Mr President to an election of NYCN magnitude.

``Contrary to the rumour making the round and impression created, President Jonathan does not have any reason to be interest in who emerges as president of the council.

``If anybody is parading him/herself as the president’s candidate, he/she is on his own, it is unfair to drag the president’s name into this,’’ he said.

Abdullahi, who is also the sports minister, said that government had obligation to the youth in the country and not to NYCN.

``The Federal Government of Nigeria is obligated to the youth of this country, but its obligation to the youth is not the same thing as it being obligated to NYCN.

``Although, NYCN is a very important organisation of young intellects in this country, but the NYCN is not a government agency.

``The NYCN is not a constitutional organisation under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, so the government is not going to detain itself because of NYCN,’’ he said.

He said the NYCN became important because government wanted a coordinated youth organisation.

``NYCN is important because government will be happy to have a strong platform for coordinated intervention on those issues that affect young people.

``If we have a strong NYCN, it makes it easy for government to service the interest of young people, but with a disorganised council, government may not want to intervene.

``So, it is in the interest of young people anywhere that NYCN is strong and united,’’ he said.

The minister charged the NYCN to make itself relevant to its agenda to gain government’s support.

According to him, if the NYCN makes itself relevant in the agenda of the Federal Government to service the interest of young people, NYCN will also stand to benefit.

``But, if NYCN makes itself incapable of providing the platform for it, the government will not be showing responsibility, instead, obliged to seek new partnership,’’ he said.

Abdullahi noted that though, a lot of injustice had been committed in the past, they could still be corrected.

``In my understanding, a lot of wrongs have been carried out, but I believe that if you want to do justice, you have to be willing to start all over.

``And I hope we will do that,’’ he said.

There  was an alleged mismanagement of NYCN election, which led to the sack of the former Minister of Youths Development, Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir. (NAN)

AUC, AGRA sign MoU to grow agriculture

By JIMOH BABATUNDE,  Maputo
The African Union  Commission and the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will make the continent more food secured.

The agreement is to foster collaboration and strengthen the working relationship between Africa Union Commission (AUC)   and Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) so as to support the strong implementation of AU´s Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP).

CAADP brings together key players - at the continental, regional and national levels - to improve co-ordination, share knowledge, successes and failures, to encourage one another, and to promote joint and separate efforts to achieve the CAADP goals.

Speaking at the brief ceremony, Africa Union´s commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, Tmusiime Rhoda peace, promised that the signing of the MOU is a re-affirmation of the need to work with AGRA as they have competitive edge in dealing with smallholder farmers in the continent.

Explaining that 2014 declared as the AU Year of Agriculture and Food Security will not be achievable if they don’t work with notable partners like AGRA, “we need everybody, wherever they are placed and in whatever they do to be part of the building the case for agriculture and demonstrating what agriculture can do on the continent in the entire year of 2014.”

Speaking at the launch, Deputy Chairman, AGRA, Strive Masiyiwa said it is coincidence that the Africa Union used their platform to bring African leaders together 10 years ago in Maputo to launch Agriculture revolution with the pledge of 10% of their national budget to agriculture.

“It is wonderful that we are here in Maputo to access how far the journey has been and how to re-assess how to defeat hunger in Africa.”

The President of AGRA, Jane Karuku appreciating what the AUC has done with CAADP in trying to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty through agriculture, promised the support of AGRA in increasing agriculture productivity and promote agriculture development by addressing best practices.

Dangote refinery to employ 8,000 engineers, create jobs for 85,000 Nigerians

Abuja -  The President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said about 8,000 engineers would be needed for the smooth take off of the nine- billion- dollar Dangote Refinery/Fertiliser plant in Ondo.

Dangote told State House correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja that the project, when completed, would provide direct and indirect jobs for 85,000 Nigerians.

He said the group had secured a 3.3 billion-dollar credit facility from a consortium of banks for the project.

According to him, importation of petroleum products will end by 2016 as the plant will commence production in the next three years.

He said his plan was to make the country self-reliant in petrochemical and petroleum products, as well as make it an industrial giant.

``Now, Nigeria is going to be taken out of the list of countries that import petroleum products. We will produce 20 million metric tonnes which is equivalent to what Nigeria consumes currently.

``Today, we did the signing ceremony, the vice-president came to witness the signing but we insisted on coming to  thank Mr president for his policies .

``Without good government policies, there is no way the private sector can invest in Nigeria, because we are not Father Christmas at all. The policies have to be right,’’ he said.

According to Dangote,  Nigeria currently spends about 30 billion dollars annually on importation of petroleum products.

He said the complex planned by his group would make Nigeria a net exporter of petroleum products, including diesel and aviation fuel, as well as poly-propylene and fertiliser. (NAN)

Don’t destroy varsity system, PFN warns ASUU, FG

By SIMON EBEGBULEM

BENIN — Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, has expressed worries over the prolonged strike embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and urged the Federal Government to hasten peace moves in the interest of Nigerian students.

PFN, in a statement by its National President, Rev. Felix Omobude, in Benin City, Edo State, yesterday, acknowledged the alleged failure of the Federal Government to honour the agreement reached with ASUU in 2009, and appealed to parties to find urgent solution to the problem so as not to destroy the university system.

He said: “While PFN salutes the spartan courage of the leadership of ASUU for its positive position on the urgent need to revamp and reposition the education sector, PFN is of the strong view that the need has arisen to bring into sharp focus, the crushing brunt the country is now being made to bear for the continued closure of the universities.

“PFN appeals to ASUU not to throw away the baby with its bath water but should return to class as  soon as possible in the interest of parents, students and indeed, the country.”

It urged the Federal Government to treasure the integrity that goes with honouring agreements by implementing the said agreement with ASUU with candour and greater commitment as that will reposition and service the education sector on continuous basis, instead of waiting to be stampeded into action by strikes.

PFN called on “the three tiers of government to urgently address the issues of insecurity and unemployment currently posing serious threat to millions of Nigerians. We urge government at all levels to, as a matter of urgency, address the issue of unemployment in the country with particular emphasis on youth restiveness.”

Niger Delta youths allege plan to hijack NDDC projects

By EMMA AMAIZE

WARRI—Niger-Delta Youth for Positive Attitude and Progress, NDYPAP, has vowed to mobilise youths in the nine states of Niger Delta to resist the alleged attempt by some politicians to take over Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, projects, meant for indigenous contractors to the detriment of oil-bearing communities in Delta and Bayelsa states.

President of the group, Mr. Emmanuel Enisuo, in a statement, said “NDYPAP is joining forces with the coastal/swamp oil producing communities of Bayelsa and Delta states to declare that the people will not fold their hands and watch the selfish machination of politicians, who are bent on taking over projects meant for indigenous contractors.

“The oil communities have suffered enough deprivations of basic amenities and development from multinational oil companies, NDDC, and Federal Government. We will march on the National Assembly and NDDC headquarters if their ulterior agenda was not discontinued forthwith.

“We are strongly behind the indigenous contractor from the coastal oil producing communities of Bayelsa and Delta states to be given a chance to develop their communities, as they can be held accountable if they fail to deliver.”

The 18 communities in Delta and Bayelsa states, Amatu I, Amatu II, Agge, Azamabiri, Bilabiri I, Bilabiri II, Bisangbene, Ezetu, Orobiri, Ogbeintu, Letugbene, Azagbene, Egbemo-Angalabiri, Agbediama, Odimodi, Beniboye, Ogbotobo and Ekeni communities,  had, few weeks ago, raised alarm over plans by politicians to hijack NDDC projects meant for indigenous contractors in their areas.
