Court remands NURTW worker over alleged murder

LAGOS— An Ikeja Magistrate's Court, yesterday, ordered that a 25-year-old worker with the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Monday Ikudenyibo, be remanded in prison custody, pending the legal advice of the Director of Public Prosecution, over alleged murder of five people and attempted murder.

Ikudenyibo, who was arraigned before Magistrate Akinde, is facing a 10-count charge of conspiracy, murder and attempted murder, preferred against him by the Police.

The Police prosecutor, Inspector Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the accused and others at large committed the alleged crime on May 25, 2013 at about 8am at Ajah roundabout.

He said Ikudenyibo murdered one Shola Hausa and one Isiaka Promise by shooting them.

He added that while armed with a gun, he also murdered one Idowu Olumegbon, by shooting him.

The prosecutor said the suspect and others still at large, on the same date, time and place murdered one Bola Akeju and Hammed Alex, by shooting them.

The prosecutor, further told the court that the defendant on June 26, 2013, at about 9:30pm, at Lakowa Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos attempted to kill one Lateef Aluko by shooting him on his chest.

He said that the accused also attempted to kill one Ibrahim by shooting him on his left leg.

Emuerih also claimed that the defendant unlawfully inflicted wounds on Lateef Aluko’s chest and wounds on Ibrahim’s left leg.

According to the prosecutor, the crime committed is punishable under sections 231, 221, 228, 228, 244 (a) of the criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

However, when the 10-count charge was read to the defendant, who resides at 2, Baale Street, Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos, he pleaded not guilty, but his plea was not taken, as Magistrate Akinde ordered that he  be remanded.

Magistrate Akinde, further adjourned the case to August 26, 2013, for mention pending DPP’s advice.
