Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, has faulted the National Electoral Committee, NECOM, being sponsored and set up in Abuja by Mr. Kingsley Kuku, Special Adviser to the President on Amnesty Programme.
IYC argued that the constitutional right to conduct a legitimate election to usher in the 6th executive that would pilot the affairs of the body for the next three years rest only with NECOM under the chairmanship of Mr. Jeremiah Oba.
Oba, who fielded questions from journalists, explained that Kuku’s sponsored electoral committee in Abuja cannot hold since it was not ratified by the IYC Parliament, adding that the people he is parading as NECOM official are above 50 years of age.
He said that the electoral committee set up in Abuja contravenes both the old and new constitution, as provided for in article 3 section 1, that membership shall be open to all Ijaw youths within the age 18 to 45.
He said that Ann Kio Briggs and Akpo Mezeh, being sponsored by Kuku belonged in Ijaw National Congress, INC, since they are above the age bracket.
Oba announced that IYC's NECOM had fixed July 22 to 27 for sales of forms, submission, manifesto, election and swearing in of elected officers of the national body.
