Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have unanimously condemned in strong terms the political situation in Rivers State and called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Abubakar Mohammed to immediately re-deploy a new Commissioner of Police to the state in the interest of peace.
A member, Ajibayo Adeyeye, stated this under Matter of Urgent Public Importance at the sitting on Thursday.
According to the Majority Leader, “The Lagos State House of Assembly view the political crisis in River State where five lawmakers, said to belong to the G5 minority group, arrived with some hoodlums and impeached the Speaker Otelemaba Amachree and other Principal Officers as appalling”.
Adeyeye who represents Kosofe Constituency II, also wondered why the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA Network, repeatedly broadcasted the event giving the G5 publicity and parading a new Speaker for River State.
He said it was established that the Police Command is not far from the River State House of Assembly, but despite this some hoodlums invaded the House and beat up the lawmakers. This is bad and it is not good for our Democracy and the Rule of Law Adeyeye wondered how five out of 33 members could impeach the Speaker and other Principal Officers. This is illegality that must be condemned in totality”.
Rivers crisis: Danger to democracy
A governorship candidate of the Action Congress (A C) in Ondo State Hon Ademola Adegoroye yesterday said that the crisis in Rivers State portends grave danger to Nigerian Democracy.
Adegoroye said in a statement in Akure that it is “about ‘2015’ and a direct fallout of the election of the Chairman of the NGF in which governors exercised their rights to association and also freely elect a leader of their choice !
He however saluted the courage and timeous action of the federal House of Representatives and commended their loyalty to the Nigerian constitution.
”Their resolution taking over the functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly and asking the IG of police to immediately transfer the politician in uniform ,Mbu from rivers is not only well thought out and timeous.
Adegoroye said that “it is indeed a right step in the right direction . History will judge them right. He lambasted the five members of the Assembly who threw decorum to the winds by attempting to lord their minority over the majority with the aid of thugs and the support of the Nigerian Police.
The governorship candidaate said their unpatriotic action led to the inevitable sealing off of the Assembly and the take over of the its functions by the National Assembly.
Adegoroye however criticized the Senate for not taking a firm decision on the River State Crisis.
” As for the Nigerian Senate, it is indeed sad that they seem to have become too comfortable with their fat allowances and so anything goes.
”They also seem to have become be clouded by their own self serving interests and their own individual ambition post 2015 that they have abandoned their stabilizing role.
”I hasten to remind them that it is only when our democracy fledges that anyone can pursue and achieve whatever ambition that he one she may have now or in the future.
”I want to use this opportunity to call on Mr President to do all he can to protect the constitution having sworn before God and Nigerians so to do.
” Mr President does not need to be reminded on the circumstances that threw him up as acting President and eventually President and Commander in chief .
”He didn’t have to force God and Nigerian and he will not need to force God and Nigerians to enable him have a second term in office.
”The constitution which he swore to uphold and protect, guarantees that,subject to the wishes of the Nigerian electorate.
”If anything goes wrong with our Democracy today, he will be the biggest loser because as of today,he is the biggest beneficiary. Government comes,government goes,Nigerians will remain.
