National Sports Commission (NSC) director of grassroots sports development, Alhassan Yakmut has attributed the reduced number of events for the forthcoming U-17 National Youth Games, to lack of patronage by participating states.
Yakmut said in Lagos that some states had earlier complained of financial constraints, which he said, informed the decision to drop some events for now.
“It’s a test run, even at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, it’s not all sports that are in the youth Games.
“Go and check your records and see normally when you are starting, you start on a low scale to be sure of the statistics you have, then you keep upgrading.
“We initially wanted to start with 19 sports but we found out that most states didn’t budget for it, so we had to reduce it to a low scale. And we recommended to the honourable Minister and the Director-General and its being considered but a few will start.
Then next year, being an annual event, it will be upgraded in number..”
