Saintfiet said: “The goal is to try to help qualify Malawi for the World Cup 2014 in Brazil. I will work with a strong team of local coaches.”

The 40-year-old has coached in Africa with Namibia, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.

Malawi will play their last Group F qualifier against Nigeria on 6 September, knowing a win will put them through to the play-offs.

The Super Eagles lead the group on nine points, two ahead of the Flames.

“I know Nigeria and I know Malawi, I am convinced that Malawi has the quality to win,” added Saintfiet, who will fly out to Malawi tomorrow  to watch the friendly match against Mozambique.
