An associate professor of sociology, University of Lagos, Dr Nduka Nwabueze, wants the Federal Government to intervene in the chaos in Taraba State, following Governor Danbaba Suntai's return to the state.
A non-governmental organization, ASIS International, also noted the timely intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan and other well-meaning Nigerians would prevent the state from sliding into anarchy.
Nwabueze made the call at a public lecture entitled, ‘Enhancing Security in Contemporary Nigerian Society', organized by ASIS International Chapter 273 Abuja, in Maitama Abuja.
He noted that if the situation was not properly handled, it could heighten the current insecurity in the country, maintaining that most of the problems ravaging the country were as a result of “keeping mum’ on the part of our leaders”, calling on the president to intervene.
“Most of the insecurity we are facing in Nigeria today is man-made. Speak when there is crisis in a particular place, not keeping quiet; if Taraba falls into
crisis today, the whole country will fall into crisis. Stop keeping mum, speak when it is necessary, not when the situation has gone out of hands,” he said.
The don wondered why leadership must wait until a situation degenerates before responding to it.
Citing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) strikes as example, he said that the Federal Government took little or no step until they embarked on industrial action.
Nwabueze further stated that when a nation slides into poverty, it becomes a breeding ground for insecurity, urging government to intensify its efforts on improving the country’s economy.
According to him, “the condition under which people live may force them to take some unprecedented action, concluding that after all, if we do this we will die and we don’t, we will still die”.
