AWKA — SIX local government areas in Anambra State were yesterday handed cheques totaling N1.2 billion for the execution of projects under the Millennium Development Goal, MDG, programmes.
The benefitting local governments are Anaocha, Ihiala, Idemili North, Ekwusigo, Ogbaru and Oyi and under the programme, each local government would receive N200 million.
Seven local governments had earlier benefitted from the programme and, according to the state Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Professor Chinyere Okunna, the remaining eight local government areas will also benefit from the programme before the end of the tenure of the present administration in the state.
Local governments that had earlier benefited from the programme were Orumba South, Awka North, Anambra West, Ayamelum, Anambra East, Nnewi South and Dunukofia.
The projects are in the areas of health care development, renovation of schools, sinking of boreholes, among others.
Okunna said contracts for the jobs would be executed by the indigenes of the benefiting communities for easy monitoring by the stakeholders in the areas such as traditional rulers, presidents general and women leaders.
At the flag off of the programme in Awka, Governor Peter Obi urged the benefitting communities to take ownership of the projects sited in their areas to avoid situations of failure.
Obi said: “The aim of asking the communities to take ownership of the projects is to bring governance closer to the people. MDG is our vision and we want to use it to make Anambra a reference for good things for other states to emulate.”
He, however, said government would continue to supervise and monitor the projects to ensure they met the required specifications.
