Ondo State guber: We‘re down, but not weakened over S/Court judgement - APC

By DAYO JOHNSON

Akure — THE All Progressives Congress, APC, weekend, said the Supreme Court judgment on the governorship election in Ondo State, last week affected its members negatively, but insisted that their spirit would not be weakened.

In a statement in Akure, the Senator representing Ondo North Senator Ajayi Boroffice, said, however, that “we must accept the decision of the court.

“This judgment might have dampened our spirit but it has not weaken our determination to rescue our state from the clutches of poverty, mass unemployment, among others.

”Though we long for a change in agreement with the feelings of the people of Ondo State, the decision of the highest court of the land has not dispensed justice in this direction.

“Leaders of our party, the professionals, and the people fought a good fight like gallant soldiers of progress. They spoke against policies that would not allow development in their communities.

“You demanded character in leadership and agitated for good governance that will provide a launch-pad for a rapid industrial development of the state.

”We salute the courage of our governorship candidate, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and his legal team in their unwavering commitment to clean poll.

“You did not lose; you only set agenda for the new phase of activities for our great party in Ondo State.

“Let us all remain focused in our resolve to produce a progressive government in which good governance and democratic institutions thrive to guarantee justice, equity and opportunities for our people.

“We will continue to demand and insist on free and fair elections to ensure that the choices of our people are respected and reflected in their representation.”

INEC has no reason not to register APC - ACN

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) says the All Progressives Congress (APC) has met all the requirements to consummate its merger, hence INEC has no defensible reason not to approve the merger.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said in spite of recent media reports concerning the antics of some negative forces within INEC over APC's registration, the emerging party's leadership has no doubt that in the end, the electoral body will do what is right in accordance with the law.

It therefore dismissed as a mere speculation the report that INEC was planning to write a letter to the proponents of APC to find another name because of a court case instituted by a political association over the APC acronym.

''We are convinced that INEC has no discernible reason to write such a letter to us. In the first instance, there exists no court injunction anywhere restraining the commission from registering APC. There could be many court cases, but until there is a court order, no one can preempt what a court will do and act on that basis.

''Again, we have met all the stipulated requirements. INEC has also inspected our proposed headquarters in Abuja and sighted all our interim officers. The merger process may be novel, but we have played according to the rules and we expect nothing less from INEC,'' ACN said.

The party expressed satisfaction with the statement credited to Mr. Kayode Idowu, spokesman for the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, that there is no court injunction compelling the Commission to stop the merger.

''We believe we are on the same page with INEC as far as this trail-brazing merger is concerned, and that has been confirmed by the INEC spokesman, and we therefore call on the Commission to do the proper thing right now - which is the registration of APC.

''There is no doubt that INEC is under tremendous pressure, from both the card-carrying PDP members of the Commission and their collaborators who are mortally afraid of the merger, and who will want the electoral body to commence, right now, the process of rigging the 2015 election in their favour.

''But we urge INEC not to compromise its neutrality and integrity by acting contrary to the law. We remind the Commission thatNigerians are keenly watching how it will handle this merger issue, and whatever it does will determine whether or not Nigerians can count on it to organize a free, fair and credible elections in 2015.

''Given the already over-heated polity ahead of the 2015 elections, we believe INEC will not do anything that will aggravate the situation,'' it said.

Meanwhile, the ACN has appealed to all the supporters of the emerging APC across the country to remain calm over the registration issue.

''We know that many of our teeming supporters are upset by the report of the shenanigans in INEC over this issue. But it is important for them to remain law-abiding as we await the decision of INEC. We are confident, going by the words of INEC itself, that the court case instituted by those laying claim to the APC acronym has no bearing on what is going on,'' the party
assured.

APC REGISTRATION CONTROVERSY ‘We will take over Abuja if …’

By Johnbosco Agbakwuru
ALL Progressive Congress, APC, has vowed to occupy all public places including the  Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Abuja, the Federal Capital, and the National Assembly if after July 31, the electoral umpire refuses to register it as a political party.

A source in INEC allegedly hinted that as a result of pressure from ‘the powers-that-be’, APC may not be registered as the Commission use the court case brought against INEC by the rival African Peoples Congress, which is also laying claim to the APC acronym, as the reason.

Reacting to the alleged plan,  a member of the disbanded Joint Merger Committee and National Deputy Secretary of Congress for Progressive Change, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, dismissed it saying the INEC committee that inspected the APC office and the documents presented to it gave the merger of political parties a pass mark.

Obono-Obla told Sunday Vanguard: “There is no iota of truth in that story. It is speculative because my information from INEC is that APC scored 98 per cent when the INEC team went to inspect our secretariat and look into our documentation. They gave us 98 per cent and the committee recommended strongly that we have met all the requirements and we should be registered.

“INEC met on Thursday to confirm that report and indeed all the reports were approved, so this one you are saying is strange because that case by the phantom APC (African Peoples Congress) has nothing to do with us and it cannot be used as a guise to deny us registration. If that is done, we will know that truly INEC is an appendage of the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party).

“I do not believe that INEC is an appendage of PDP but if they try to deny us registration, then, I will know that there is no hope for Nigeria again. The only option for the country will be what is happening in Egypt, what is happening in Turkey what is happening in Brazil.

“We must mobilize all our supporters all over the country to come to Abuja and embark on hunger strike until it is registered because there is nothing we have done that will deny us registration”.

The CPC chieftain and a former governorship candidate on the platform of National Conscience Party, NCP, in Cross Rivers State, said that APC had applied to INEC to be registered as a political party on June 8th,  after fulfilling all the requirements and was deemed to have been registered going by the law after 30 days of the application.

He however said that INEC claimed that the 30 days started counting from July 1st when the names of the interim national officers were submitted to the Commission and that after July 31st, APC by law would be deemed as being registered.

Also reacting to the alleged plan not to register APC, the National Publicity Secretary of CPC, Rotimi Fashakin said that it was unethical and out of place to react to rumour but added that the law governing political parties in merger arrangement was clear likewise the law for a new party registration.
