PDP Convention: Tukur, Party served ruling, to appeal Judgment

By Henry Umoru
ABUJA- NATIONAL leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP will on Monday appeal the judgment of  an Abuja High Court which on Thursday  aborted the planned Special National Convention of  the party  for the purpose of electing its national officers.

Vanguard gathered yesterday that the PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and the party were yesterday served the papers of the Apo High Court judgement.

According to the source, Tukur and other members of the National Working Committee, NWC were not happy with the development and not to waste time, the acting National Legal Adviser, Simon Jok was immediately asked to work out plans of appealing the judgment on Monday as a way of setting aside the decision of the court and the convention to hold as planned.

All efforts to get the PDP acting National Publicity Secretary, Tony Caeser Okeke to speak on the matter proved abortive as his telephone rag severally, but did not pick.

The party had fixed the Special National Convention for August 31st at the Eagle Square, Abuja and August 24th for the South West Congress.

It will be recalled that the  court, in a ruling delivered on Thursday, restrained the party from carrying out any action with a view to filling vacancies in its national structure, pending the hearing and determination of a suit filed against it by three aggrieved members.

The Professor Jerry Gana led Special Convention Planning  Committee is saddled with the responsibility of organising the Convention by the PDP National Executive Committee, NEC,

The Court while dismissing  a preliminary objection that sought to terminate further hearing on the suit brought against the party by Abba Yale, Yahaya Sule and Bashir Maidugu, Justice Suleiman Belgore accused PDP of deliberately attempting to usurp the powers of the court by fixing a date to hold its national convention despite being aware that a case bordering on such subject matter was pending before the court.

The court’s decision came  barely twenty four hours   after Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, inaugurated the  Special National Convention Planning Committee.
