Woman, 5 others in court over alleged robbery

Lagos — An Ikeja Mag-istrate Court, Lagos,  yesterday, remanded a woman, Chioma Ezekwesili, 36, and five men in Kirikiri prison, Lagos custody, pending the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution, over alleged robbery charge against them.

The defendants were alleged to have while armed with two double barrel rifles and 12 live cartridges, attempted to rob one Alahaji Bamidele.

The other defendants are Emeka Igwe (41), Ignatous Ezerele (37), Michael Madu (52),Oke Jerom (28) and Bright Ikubor (23).

They were arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, attempted robbery and unlawful possession of firearms, preferred against them by the police.

Magistrate Abimbola Komolafe ordered that they  be remanded in prison custody pending the legal advice from the DPP.

The Police prosecutor, Inspector Iranus Nnamonu, said the defendants and others at large, committed the alleged crime on August 18, 2013, at 10 pm, adding that the incident took place at Bolatito Hotel,  Kola, Alagbado area of Lagos.

According to the prosecutor, the offence committed is contrary to section 5 (b) and punishable under section 1(2) (a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, Cap 398 Vol XXii, laws of Federal Republic of Nigeria 2003.

However, when the charge was read to the defendants, their pleas were not taken. The court adjourned the case to October 22, 2013.

Two brothers docked over robbery, kidnap

Two brothers, Olayinka Jagbojagbo,38,and Kabiru Jagbojagbo, 30, were, on Friday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, over alleged kidnap and robbery.

The suspects who were docked before Magistrate Abimbola Komolafe, are facing a four- count charge of conspiracy, robbery, kidnap and attempt to escape, preferred against them by the police.

The police prosecutor, inspector Iranus Nnamonu, told the court that the accused and others at large, committed the alleged crime some time in January, 2013, at about 3:20pm, at 26, Jagbojabo Villa Erode, in Epe area of Lagos State.
He said that the accused and others at large received N8,500,000 ransom from ZTM Nigeria Limited, over a kidnapped Chinese national one Mr Kuang Vingjiun, who is a staff of ZTE Nigeria Ltd, at Osborne Road in Ikoyi.

Nnamonu said that the suspects and other members of the gang, shared   N200,000 each from the money realised as ransom.
He said that the suspects procure charms for themselves and members of their gang, from one Taiwo Aduloju, to enable them escape being punished by the police.

The prosecutor also alleged that the defendants kidnapped one Ilogbonu Kingsley Ifeanyi, on May 13, 2013, between 6pm and 7pm, at 26, Jagbojagbo Villa Erode, in Epe area of Lagos.

He claimed that they unlawfully detained him, for four days in their house and also in an uncompleted building at Imokun area of Epe, until a ransom of N500,000 was paid for his release.

According to the prosecutor, the offence committed is contrary to and punishable under section 409, 16 (B) (C) (D) and 269 (1) (2) of the criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

However when the charge preferred against the defendants, who resides at 26, Jagbojagbo Villa Erode, in Epe area of Lagos, the two brothers, pleaded not guilt to the four-count charges.

Magistrate Komolafe, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000 each, with two responsible   sureties each, one of the sureties, who must be a landlord in Lagos state.

Adding that one of the sureties must be a blood relation to the defendants, show payment of tax and address to be verified by the police.

She further adjourned the matter to September 17, 2013, for mention.

5 robbery suspects arrested in Ebony

ABAKALIKI— THE Ebonyi State Police Command, yesterday, said it arrested five robbery suspects in connection with some robbery incidents within the month in Abakaliki and its environs.

Briefing newsmen, the Command’s spokesman, DSP Sylvester Igbo said two members of a gang who are  notorious for terrorizing travellers along Afikpo/Abakaliki expressway had been arrested after they were trailed to their hideout in Amudo, Ezza South Local Government Area of the state.

He said: “Based on a tip-off, operatives of the command swung into action and trailed some suspected robbers to their hideout and arrested two suspects, one Chukwuma Nworie, 32, and one Sunday Paul, 24, of Ishinkwo community in Onicha Local government Area the state.

“Items recovered from them included one double barrel locally made pistol, three live cartridges, two laptops, three memory cards, 39 handsets batteries, 36 GSM phohes and a para-military uniform. However, the suspects are helping the police in their investigations to fish out other members of the gang now at large.”

According to the Igbo, one Desmond Ogbonna, 22, and Ndubuisi Umeh, 21, who robbed their victim, one Eze Nnaemeka at 1A, Ikpo Street in Abakaliki of N292, 000, one Blackberry phone valued at N23,500 and a dairy containing signed cheques of different banks were also arrested.

“The black berry, Diary, cheques, the sum of N210, 000 and materials bought with part of the money were recovered”

DSP Igbo who restated the command’s determination of rid the state of crimes and criminality added that one Amobi Nweke who attempted to rob one Okada man along Chukwu Street, Abakaliki was also arrested even as a locally made pistol was recovered from the suspect.

Police kill three robbery suspects in Ogun

ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State Police Command said three of the five suspects, who robbed Agarau Shopping Complex in Ota, Sunday,  were killed by its men.

The command’s  spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, yesterday, in Abeokuta.

Adejobi said: “We heard about the robbery operation and the command’s men swung into action. We met the robbers at the scene and engaged them in a fierce gun battle that lasted 30 minutes.

“We were able to kill three of them on the spot while two escaped with bullet wounds.

“The robbers robbed the owner of the complex of N1.2 million before the police anti-robbery team attached to Onipanu Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, Oyeniyi Yemi,  arrived the scene.

“The team recovered the N1.2 million, one locally made single barrel, double-barrel and triple-barrel guns and four live cartridges.We also recovered two expended cartridges and a motorcycle.”

He urged residents of the area to help the police  fish out the fleeing robbers.

Adejobi said that the command led by the Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, had promised to make the state safe for all.

 

Two robbery suspects nabbed in Onitsha

ONITSHA — Two gun-men suspected to be robbers or kidnappers have been apprehended by the police in Onitsha, Anambra State as they were allegedly planning to carry out criminal activities in the commercial city.

The suspects whose identities were yet to be ascertained at press time, according to the source, were arrested at Okpoko area of Onitsha by a combined team of Onitsha vigilance operatives and anti-robbery police team attached to Okpoko Police Division who were on a routine patrol in the area.

According to the source, the two men who were neatly dressed and carrying hand bags were shortly on arrest, searched and two AK47 riffles and one pistol found concealed inside their hand bags.

The Divisional Police Officer, DPO, at Okpoko, Mr. Emeka Ugwu (CSP), who confirmed the arrest told newsmen in a telephone chat that there would be no hiding place for criminals in his division.

Commenting on the arrest, a prominent Onitsha businessmen who preferred anonymity, said that criminals in the area no longer had a hiding place as both the Police and men of the Vigilance operatives were busy monitoring the area and picking them up.

He commended the Onitsha Vigilante Group and the Anambra Police Command for effectively bring crime and criminal activities to a manageable level in the state and called on the people to assist security operatives, by offering useful information that could lead to the arrest of criminals and curbing of crime in the State.
